In this exhibition, the lives of 10 women pioneers are examined and artistically interpreted by 10 contemporary artists, all women practicing in San Diego. Each artist is paired with one historic figure to create new work that honors the essence and meaning of that pioneer woman’s life. The pioneer women are Louise Balmer, Mabel Bell, Florence Sawyer Bransby, Anna Held, Florence Palmer, Lilian Rice, Mary Richmond, Mary Ritter, Ellen Browning Scripps and Virginia Scripps.

Katinka Kleijn, a champion of new music and a member of the Chicago Symphony, is a soloist in Philip Glass’ graceful Second Cello Concerto, drawn from his score to the film Noqoyqatsi. The concert concludes with one of Anton Bruckner’s most compact and attractive symphonies, dedicated to Wagner and full of Bruckner’s glorious writing for brass. Emerging composer LJ White adds to the fun with a new work commissioned by the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus.
