Sushi on the Rock Reopens at La Plaza
Family and fresh fish with amazing flavors and sauces have been a strong concept for Sushi on the Rock for almost 30 years in San Diego. They plan to continue those traditions at the reopening of Sushi on the Rock at the La Plaza off Girard Avenue. Japan native Aiko Johnson opened Sushi on the Rock in 1990 on Prospect. In 1998, the restaurant relocated to Girard Avenue and was run by Aiko’s son, Paul Johnson, who spent his childhood summers in Japan and started rolling sushi at the young age of 4.
What Makes Sushi on the Rock Unique
Sushi on the Rock is a neighborhood staple and one of the first sushi restaurants to open in La Jolla. They are known for being friendly and knowledge and their patrons and community. You will see that some of the sushi rolls are named after regulars who frequent the establishment and make suggestions as to interesting and unique rolls. Sushi on the Rock cares about the food quality and customers. They pride themselves in being entrenched in our community and hosting with a warm heart.
Sushi on the Rock was looking to expand and add a private dining room since they get requests for catering and private parties. As luck would have it, their lease was up on the old location. La Plaza offered the modern look they desired along with location and history of being on Girard. They are so thrilled to add Asian Pacific Rim as well as vegetarian and gluten-free dishes to the menu, which will give customers who are shy about sushi the opportunity to dine along with their friends while enjoying the delicious cuisine and quite possibly tempt them into sampling sushi.
The decor is beautiful, warm and inviting with a hip and sultry feel. It is perfect for families, business luncheons, hosted parties on the patio and private room and most importantly a unique and wonderful experience. The new location has two patios, and happy hour is served daily from 3-6 p.m. They have gone away from the traditional sushi bar and feel; most people like sitting together where they can see each other and have that bonding experience. But don’t fret! Sushi on the Rock still a has a bar where you can enjoy beer, wine, sake and sakitinis along with your favorite sushi and rolls.
