“Be the change you want to see in the world,” Gandhi once said. In order to change the world, one must act locally. La Jolla Lifestyle spoke with two local companies that are making a difference through their products and teachings: Sand Cloud and Momentum Dance Co.
Lay out on the beach, a park, wherever you are outdoors in luxury style while saving the fishies with Sand Cloud. Designed and developed in San Diego, Steven Ford, Brandon Leibel and Bruno Aschidamini saw an opportunity to start a brand that specializes in the niche towel market. They wanted to create a towel brand that focused on unique features and patterns, while also giving back to preserve marine life. From every purchase made, 10 percent of the profits goes back to marine life organizations including the Marine Conservation Institute, Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Coastkeeper and more.
Since they began in 2014, Sand Cloud has evolved into a lifestyle brand that offers apparel, shirts, hoodies, leggings, accessories, backpacks, jewelry and even reusable water bottles. Customers can do more than shop; they can become apart of the Ambassador Program to help spread the Sand Clouds mission by using social media. Globally there are more than 200,000 Sand Cloud ambassadors who promote the brand’s merchandise by sharing their experiences and tagging #savethefishies and #sandcloud in their posts. In 2017, the guys went on the ABC hit show Shark Tank and got a deal, which helped them grow their brand recognition in the marine life community and beyond.
“We believe the beach lifestyle is something you never have to grow out of. For us, the beach means freedom, friendship and communing with nature,” Brandon says. “It’s a place to express your unique individuality and style while you share good vibes. Every day at the beach replenishes your spirit so you can live your life with passion. We are three friends with a shared vision: to protect the beaches, ocean, marine life and lifestyle we love by building a company that not only represents this vision but gives back to help fund nonprofits that support our cause. Since day one, we’ve worked to create beautiful, innovative products to inspire people and help create awareness.” SandCloud.com
Momentum Dance Co.
Momentum Dance Company is a boutique dance and fitness studio offering weekly classes, monthly workshops and community events. They have a few classes that remain permanent on their schedule, but the studio likes to rotate classes and workshops to keep things fresh. You’ll never take the same class twice at Momentum as the schedule is always changing and evolving, and instructors keep their classes new and exciting. Owner Dominique Lopez offers a wide variety of children’s programs including Mommy and Me, Kid’s Latin and Creative Ballet. Along with the children’s programs, she teaches adult dance and fitness classes including barre, Buti yoga and Latin cardio. She also choreographs her adult all-female dance troupe, the Violet Vixens. Much like your favorite clothing boutique or consignment store, they always have something new to offer.
Momentum Dance Company works with local and national charities. Those charities include Save the Children, Feeding America SD, YWCA, Hamilton’s Heart Foundation, San Diego Human Society, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Dancers Care, Becky’s House and more. Additionally, MDC sponsors families in financial distress and families of children with disabilities.
They are also hosts to local charities that need space for their programs and make a point to support female entrepreneurs/small business owners and any charity or event benefiting children or woman.
Momentum Dance Company is looking forward to upcoming renovations to further beautify their incredible space and offer even more programs. They are also planning to participate in more charity events throughout the state/nation and planning curriculum for a series of classes devoted to children on the spectrum with sensory issues and their families.
