The acclaimed NINE-TEN Restaurant, located at the landmark Grande Colonial hotel, has completed a $300,000 renovation. The project, designed by San Diego-based Robinson Brown Design, includes a revitalized dining room and bar, and an updated sidewalk patio dining area and ocean-view terrace. New elements include a refreshing color scheme with infusions of emerald green and light wood, while keeping with the restaurant’s existing stone tiled floor. The main focal point is the vibrant and locally inspired ocean and fauna wall panorama created by local, renowned artist, Dana Montlack, alluding to the restaurant’s iconic location at La Jolla Cove.


The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s President, William J. Kellogg, was inducted into the SCTA Hall of Fame on October 1, 2017. A long-time tennis player, Kellogg is the fourth generation Kellogg family member to serve as president of the Kellogg-family properties, which include the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, The La Jolla Shores Hotel, The Marine Room Restaurant, The Shores Restaurant, the Playa del Oro Apartments, and the F.W. Kellogg commercial building in La Jolla. The induction ceremony was held at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach. Mr. Kellogg’s induction class included two of tennis’ greatest players of all-time, Rod Laver and Bobby Riggs.

Annie Lawless Launches New Luxe Natural 
Cosmetics Brand

La Jolla local, Annie Lawless, has numerous titles to her name: co-founder of Suja Juice, the nation’s largest organic cold-pressed juice company headquartered in Miramar, Forbes 30 under 30 alumna, NYT Best Selling author, and wellness blogger behind Now, the La Jolla based entrepreneur is adding makeup guru to her resumé by launching her own luxury natural cosmetics brand, LAWLESS, which debuted October 23 with a high-end line of natural soft matte liquid lipsticks in eight highly pigmented shades ranging from the perfect, pouty nude to deep reds and trendy metallics.

Giuseppe Ciuffa’s La Sede Open 
for Events

Giuseppe Ciuffa, the chef behind Bottega Americano and award-winning Giuseppe Restaurants & Fine Catering, which runs Caroline’s Seaside Café and MCASD’s Museum Cafe, has opened a new event space, catering headquarters and sales office in La Jolla. La Sede (Italian for “headquarters”), is a 2,000-square foot space for holiday parties, wedding showers, business events, pop-up dinners and more, providing an inspired space for celebration where guests can sample Giuseppe Catering’s extensive menu of modern Italian and work with Ciuffa and his team to create an unforgettable event.

Jewish Community Foundation Hosts 50th Anniversary Brunch

In celebration of 50 years of community building through philanthropy and innovative programs, the Jewish Community Foundation held an anniversary brunch at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Carol Leifer, Emmy nominee, producer, and comedy writer for such highly- acclaimed shows such as Seinfeld, Saturday Night Live, and Modern Family shared her story with dignitaries, community leaders, grantees, donors, and partners. As a nonprofit philanthropic service provider, the Foundation helps match philanthropic passions of donors with grantee recipients from the community and around the world.

LJ Crafted Wines Awards at 
Sommelier Challenge

LJ Crafted Wines received multiple awards at the Sommelier Challenge, an International Wine and Spirits Competition which took place September in San Diego. LJ Crafted Wines received two platinum and two gold awards, with three of these wines being submitted in wine growlers / re-usable bottles. LJ Crafted Wines was the only winery to submit wines to the competition in wine growlers. LJ Crafted Wines announced earlier this year that they have stopped bottling with conventional single-use bottles to focus their entire business on their environmentally- friendly growler program. Their patent-pending technology, aptly called the “Wine Steward,” is a delivery device, which allows wine to be served directly from the barrel in which it is aging, growler after growler, glass after glass, while maintaining the integrity of the remaining contents of the barrel.

Himitsu Opens in La Jolla

After much anticipation, La Jolla’s newest culinary addition has arrived! The space that was formerly home to Porkyland has been revamped to now house Himitsu, an elevated Japanese restaurant that specializes in fresh nigiri, sashimi, sushi and izakaya-style tapas inspired by Executive Chef Mitsu himself. The sold-out opening gala raised more 
than $140,000 to benefit Promises2Kids 
and Voices for Children and their work on behalf of local foster children. Attendees enjoyed cocktails, sweet and savory bites, and shopped the season’s best styles in the newly relocated Nordstrom La Jolla at UTC store. Entertainment included celebrity DJs Tony Okungbowa and Lindsay Luv spinning while models presented the newest looks for fall from Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Comme des Garcons, Simone Rocha, Marques’Almeida and more.

Army Toy Drive

Massage Envy San Diego, in partnership with The Salvation Army, is helping struggling San Diego families this holiday season by hosting a toy drive in each of their Massage Envy locations throughout San Diego County until December 16. The Salvation Army’s goal for 2017 is to provide 40,000 toys (in addition to stocking stuffers) to 14,000 children countywide. Participating San Diego Massage Envy locations will be a drop-off site for new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages.
